I am a medium but do not understand mediumship.

Me when I realized I can talk to spirits…

I was always fascinated by mediumship shows. The OG John Edwards’ show, Long Island Medium, Tyler Henry. I loved how they casually brought up things that they had no business knowing… but they did. I always wondered how they were able to access that information. I didn’t know then that I could do the same thing.

I grew up Catholic and was always terrified of the occult because … eviiiil *said in Gollum voice*
“They’re demons!” “It’s not of God!” “The Bible warns on mediums!” Maybe one day I’ll write a book on all the things I had to unlearn from decades as a practicing Catholic. But for now, what I believe to be true is that I was given this ability to help others. Now, I am not special–not by any means. I think everyone comes equipped with the ability to communicate with the other side. I’m an iPhone user so I can use this analogy to better explain (android readers, I apologize but I have to go with what I know): When you set up your phone, it comes with apps that you really don’t use. If you aren’t a musician, then obviously the GarageBand app isn’t going to be for you. And if you are an artist, perhaps the iMovie app isn’t in your ballpark. So what do we do? Delete. That’s sort of like the ability to communicate. It’s there, you can access it, but it might take time for you to learn.

But if you are a musician and/or an artist, then these two apps would be incredibly useful. And your learning curve would be exponentionally shorter because you know what you are looking for. You are only finding your bearings in the app and eventually, everything it offers becomes second nature. And then with updates, you will find your use of the app even more productive.

That’s what happens to people with this ability. Maybe you aren’t interested in communication or maybe you were told it was wrong. In that case you deleted it from your operating system. That’s what I did. I deleted it because it was wrong. But eventually, I got my mediumship groove back. Typically, any ability like this comes after a traumatic experience. In my case it was birth– the hardest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. I not only had my daughter but also the ability to help other people. I think of it like an emotional hard reset.

So here I am, six years later and finally accepting what I’ve wanted to do for a while. I can’t explain how others do it, but I can try to elaborate on how I do. And even then it might be tricky.

First, I see better with my eyes closed. Yes, I understand that doesn’t make sense but anything metaphysical requires you to let go of logical thought. Remember that your brain is trying to protect you at all costs and if it can’t see *waves at air* anything, the alarm goes off and creates fear. First I get a nudge or a knock because some spirits are polite. If the person was a ball of energy I’ll feel that too. Then they present themselves. If it’s a grandma, I feel a female energy that is nurturing and sweet. If they had distinctive attire, they’ll show themselves (again, in my mind) in those clothes. Depending on how they want to validate themselves might smell cigarettes if they were smoker. I’ve had one experience where I got a sudden pain in my head and it turns out that particular person had died of a bullet to the head. I’ve had a few experiences where they will present an item that was special to them. One client had a father who came through who said to thank her for taking care of his white tennis shoes. He showed the pair of crisp, white sneakers in a closet. And sure enough, she had his pair of sneakers in a closet in her house.

My absolute most favorite part of a reading is when they convey emotion. When they want to let their family on this side know how much they loved them I am overcome by amazingly overwhelming warmth– like when you are freezing and you come near a fire. That heat starts spreading all over until it eventually envelops and comforts you. If they want to show how proud they are, they will show me a particular event in my life that I felt immense pride and it’s usually followed by love. If they want to convey remorse, I feel a heaviness all over, as if I’m under a weighted blanket.

It’s difficult to explain what each reading feels like, but what I can say for certainty is that they hear and see you. They are there through the milestones we think they missed. And they experience the joy better than we could ever imagine.
